So What Did You Think About the 'Mad Men' Season Premiere?

From left to right: Don Draper, offended woman, SCOTT, jerk with hat.

In case you've been living under a rock, the Mad Men season two premiere was last night, and I personally enjoyed it quite a bit. However, I've heard from two separate people that they felt it was a little slow. Maybe I'm in the minority? Who knows.

Nevertheless, there were many reasons to love last night's premiere, not the least of which was Peggy (or Peggs, as my friend Jash and I call her) going off on Don Draper's new secretary Lois, formerly a stalker-ish operator with a crush on the office's resident gay guy (Oops). Actually, as much as I loved that (gotta love Peggs), I enjoyed Joan's ensuing dressing down of Lois even more. It ain't easy in the steno pool.

Anyway, I have to give props to my buddy Scott MacArthur, who played one of the jerks in the elevator late in the episode. I like to brag about my friends, and as such, I've posted two images of him: one with him laughing at his chum's ribald story, and after the jump, a second image with him scowling at Don Draper. Look, I like Scott, but anyone who sasses Mr. Draper falls on my shit list. This could be a problem.

What did you think about the premiere?

Don't hate, Scott. Celebrate.

I loved the huge Xerox machine and the staff copying their faces.
Those crazy kids.

Love Joan, love the Peggy scolding, love that the housekeeper declined a ride to the station while eyeing Don's highball glass, loved the "party girl" sighting, love the Jackie-O sighting, love Mrs. Draper sexually harassing the mechanic..Love, love, LOVE this show!

Yes, it was slow, but I don't view that as any type of flaw. Mad Men has never moved that quickly, which is part of its charm. In any event, it's been 2 years, so there was some catching up to do before they started rolling along again.

I agree- I didn't mind the slowness. I actually went back and watched again after someone pointed out that Sal the gay guy is now married (!!!) I also really liked BMW only showing one old, short ad in the middle- I thought it was interesting. Hopefully other sponsors will do that too, Mad Men is so much better without breaks.

I agree- the slowness didn't really bother me. I do feel like they let too much time go in between. Would they still be talking about Peggy's weight and job 15 months later?

I didn't mind it being a little slow. I just want more. I got used to watching them on demand and now I have to wait a week between episodes. It's tough.

Loved that Mad Men is back.
I don't think it flow too slowly. The pace is just right.

i loved it! i only watched it because of you and now it is definitely entrenched into my blog as i try to get more peeps on the mad men bandwagon. unfortunately, i can't get season one on demand because at&t uverse doesn't have it on it's demand schedule. so off to blockbuster i go!

I thought it was great. Interesting use of a remote control by Don Draper in the Hotel. I don't think wireless remote controls were around back then!

I finally watched this episode and just loved it. I didn't think it was slow at all. Granted, there wasn't a lot of action or huge plot developments, but the character developments were fantastic.

I love the shift of power in the Don/Betty relationship, which I assume arose out of Don groveling for her to take him back. I can do without the impotence though, as that was not so subtle and undermines my daydreams about shirtless Don. Betty had some of the best lines of the night - the Gone with the Wind line, the subtle looks of disdain and comments about her daughter's weight, the comment about how Valentines-for-everyone took the fun out of it, her breezy declaration that Bobby was turning blue in the front yard. I had to watch that scene twice!

I also liked: the analogies between the various households and the Kennedys, Joan putting the Xerox machine in Peggys office, Pete eating his wife's candy, Don's melancholy over Rachel Menken.

I hope the whole season is this great.
