Gotta Hand It To Paris: She Did Something Funny

Last week, when the McCain camp released an ad that linked Barack Obama to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, people went nuts. Why? I don't really know. The outrage was pretty much as dumb as the commercial (I still don't know why it's okay for Obama to be associated with Scarlett Johansson but not Paris Hilton). Nevertheless, there was stupidity on all sides of the debate, and now that things have simmered down, Paris Hilton has re-entered the fray with a surprisingly funny viral video. I have to admit that I was impressed. Granted, it's not like she wrote it herself, but the execution was funny, and that's all that matters sometimes.

Bside I read your article on dipdive and in what is a rare occurance I can't agree with you.

You said that the Obama campaign should just do the same commericial about Mccain featuring Heidi Montag. My problem with this is that you just can't make an argument that McCain is a celebrity like Obama.

All 3 of the network news anchors went on a world tour with Obama to cover his very vague speeches.

Obama has been endorsed by every major celebrity there is, with the exceptions of Heidi Montag and Kid Rock.

Obama sells out arenas while McCain does town hall meetings.

Obama can appear on Oprah whenever he wants. McCain couldn't even get a ticket for the taping.

I'm not saying that this commercial worked for the McCain campaign but it wasn't totally inaccurate.

D-Lo, good points. I actually never said I disagreed with the commercial. I just think that rather than making a hubbub, the Obama people should have just struck back with a Heidi commercial, which would have not so subtly said "Hey, we can associate you with dumb celebrities too."

Personally, I think it's all kind of dumb.

Even with somewhat dumb commercials like this you Americans are still lucky when it comes to political advertising.

You only have 2 parties bickering. In Canada we have 4 (5 if you count the Green party which now has 1 seat in Parliment).

I don't think Obama needed to do anything. McCain made himself look like an idiot for that ad. It was the stupidest thing I have ever seen.

I wonder how many takes it took for Paris to explain the energy policy.
It was very clever of her, oh, and hot.

I felt a stirring of actual pride in America's sweetheart. For the first time in my experience, I heard two distinct voices from her, and I think it's possible that Paris has actually done a fairly good job all these years of selling us on (or off) a character. And I heard she did it without cue cards--worked the script until she had it down, then laid it out.
