COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK: Jack-O-Lantern Edition

With Halloween right around the corner, I thought it only fitting that this week’s Cocktail of the Week by fitting with the season. Enter Three Olives vodka, who graciously supplied me with a bottle of their Rangtang flavored vodka as well as a nifty recipe for something called “The Jack-O-Lantern.” How could I resist?

After the jump, check out the Jack-O-Lantern and see if this drink was a trick or a treat…

(Sorry, that was lame)

First, I must say that I love when free booze arrives at my doorstep. Here’s the package from Three Olives. I immediately feel immense joy — so much so that I don’t even care that I’m sharing with you my extraordinarily messy table.

Behold the Three Olives Rangtang vodka. For those who don’t know what the hell “Rangtang” means, it’s simple a goofy way of saying “orange flavored.” Oh, and also behold the OJ, I suppose.

I start off by pouring 3 oz. of OJ into the shaker. This is fun and all, but it turns out I’m supposed to put 3 oz of vodka in instead. Oops. I happily drink the juice up and start anew.

Okay, now we’re on the way for realz, yo. 3 oz of Rangtang voda — orange colored, lest there be any confusion of its flavor.

Next goes a mere 3/4 oz of orange juice.

Lastly, 3/4 oz of lime juice. Yes, I made a mess.

I fill the shaker with ice and then, well, shake.

Ta-da! The Jack-O-Lantern (insert Danny Elfman / Nightmare Before Christmas music here)

And now the tasting…

WE LIKE.

The Verdict: Super good! I didn’t really know what to expect from this drink (aside from lots of orange flavor), but I can assure you the end result is quite tasty. In fact, it’s kind of hilarious that this benign drink is called “The Jack-O-Lantern” as it is hardly spooky (nor imbued with pumpkin flavors). The best way to describe the flavor is a melted orange popsicle. That’s a good thing.

Be sure to add this to your Halloween repertoire. Thanks for the booze and the recipe, Three Olives!

  1. Yum! Sounds tasty and looks great. Something about the lighting in your pictures makes it look like it’s glow in the dark. very a-spooky!

  2. Yum! Sounds tasty and refreshing! Something about the lighting in the pictures makes it look like it’s glowing — maybe that’s where it got its name? very a-spooky!

  3. I’m feeling pretty ancient, but isn’t this beverage very similar to a “screwdriver”?

    1. Yes this is a screwdriver plus lime juice. But the 3 Olive Rangtang is new and not released everywhere yet. I bartend as a second job and all we have is 3 Olive Chocolate (FYI – YUM). I live in Ohio so I will wait to even hear mention of this potentially lovely vodka until 2011. We in the not quite middle of the U.S., but not the east coast, clearly not the west coast or the mid west which means we are the last to hear of anything cool.

Good thing my Ohioan ass figured out how to order liquor on line!

  4. I wasn’t familiar with “Rangtang” but thought it sounded vaguely dirty so I googled it. Lo and behold, yup, it’s in Urban Dictionary. Good times………

      1. Saw the drink in a bar and my brother and I googled it for the same reason. Lots and lots of giggles! And free drinks for informing the barkeep!

  5. May I start a discussion here on cocktails and names thereof?

Here’s my peeve: that some (not necessarily hereabouts, but all-the-fuck over the place nonetheless) are calling ANY drink served in a martini glass a “martini” when that’s just not the case…

    Can I get a witness?

  6. I bought a bottle of the Rangtang vodka for a friend’s birthday and she and i took a sip out of the bottle (classy ladies we are) while it was still warm, and different from other orange vodkas, it actually tastes a lot like Tang. Three Olives has come up with some very creative flavors (i.e. Root Beer and Bubblegum) as have a lot of other brands. Not sure on specific brands, but I know there is a whipped cream style vodka, a cucumber flavored, along with many others. It is fun to try the different flavors, especially since I am a vodka drinker.

  7. Basically could very well –perhaps you need to take into consideration including a number of photographs. I dont mean to disrespect what youve said; its very interesting, indeed. Nevertheless, I am would respond to it far more really if they could possibly be one thing tangible to your ideas. Thanks, but put a bit a lot more in it the next time.

  8. I do not even know how I ended up right here, however
I thought this post used to be good. I don’t recognize who you might be however definitely you are going to a famous blogger if you happen to aren’t already.
    Cheers!
