Commenting FAQ

So You Can't Figure Out How To Leave a Comment

Here's the dreaded truth:  the commenting system on my blog can be downright awful.  Most of the time it works, but occasionally, it seems to all fall apart.  What's worse than trying to comment only to be stifled by an indifferent and non-functioning computer program?  (If you answered genocide, I suppose you're right).

If you're having problems, maybe this guide will help you out.

Typekey Won't Work.  WTF???
You might be clicking in the wrong area. First, when you get to the "Sign in to comment" page, make sure you're clicking on the correct spot.  You'll want to click on the link that says "Sign in or register with TypeKey."  It's in the center of the page.  Don't click on the Typekey option on the right — nothing will happen.  Here, look at the diagram:

If that doesn't work, keep in mind that Typekey is third party software.  If the Typekey servers go down, you won't be able to comment.  To get around this, go to plan B: commenting anonymously.

Commenting Anonymously
This is the easiest way to comment -- usually.  Just fill out the requested form (Name, email, etc. -- you can use fakes!) and the CAPTCHA (those random letters that pop up to block spam), and presto!  You're done.

Some people get turned off by the option to comment anonymously because they fear they won't be able to use their name or online handle.  This is false.  You can use your name or handle.  However, you won't be tied to any sort of account (ie. Typekey), which means that technically, you could be any Joe Schmoe off the street -- or any Joe Schmoe could be you.  Hence, it's called anonymous commenting.

What if Commenting Anonymously Doesn't Even Work?
Sometimes my servers get reeeeally slow.  When that happens, the CAPTCHA letters sometimes don't show up, or the comment you've just entered times out as it tries to submit to the server.  This is, in short, THE WORST.

If this happens, feel free to email me at bsideblog at gmail dotcom.

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and/or post the comment myself with my awesome webmaster abilities.  I'm a glutton for comments, and I love discussion on my posts; so I'm always up for anything to help the process along.

Leave a comment.  I IMPLORE YOU. (LiveJournal IDs now usable!)
